TEHNOMONT MARKS CROATIA’S FIRST SIDE LAUNCH OF A CATAMARAN
On Wednesday, 30 September 2026, Tehnomont Shipyard Pula held the launching ceremony for FOX ELEKTRA, newbuilding GR.127. This P18C battery-hybrid work catamaran is being built for the Norwegian company SAMBA MARIN AS, based in Lepsøy, and will sail under the Norwegian flag.
The event holds particular significance for Tehnomont and Croatian shipbuilding, marking the first side launch of a catamaran in Croatia. The launching procedure was developed in cooperation with the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture at the University of Zagreb, bringing together the shipyard’s practical experience and the academic community’s scientific and technical expertise.
This project is underpinned by the knowledge, experience and dedication of Tehnomont Shipyard’s workers and subcontractors, whose expertise is essential throughout every stage of construction and preparation for launch. Their contribution, together with the efforts of the shipyard’s technical teams and management in organising and overseeing the project, forms the foundation of this demanding shipbuilding undertaking. The launch therefore represents a shared achievement of employees, subcontractors and management, and of the people whose work continues to advance shipbuilding in Pula.
GR.127 – FOX ELEKTRA measures 18.65 metres in length and 13.20 metres in beam, with a maximum draught of 4.30 metres. The vessel has a gross tonnage of 270 GT and a deadweight capacity of 158 tonnes, with a design maximum speed of 10 knots. Intended for coastal operations, it is being built in accordance with Norwegian regulations for small cargo vessels and the DNV-ST-0342 standard.
One of the vessel’s key features is its battery-hybrid propulsion system. The installed Lehmann Cube battery system has a total capacity of 1,012.5 kWh, equivalent to just over one megawatt-hour of energy. Propulsion is provided by two electric motors, each rated at 374 kW, delivering a combined output of 748 kW. The vessel’s power system also includes provisions for two diesel generator sets.
To carry out its operational duties, the vessel is equipped with deck cranes and specialised equipment, including an anchor-handling winch with a pulling capacity of 60 tonnes and an auxiliary towing winch rated at 15 tonnes. Bow and stern thrusters, each rated at 168 kW, enhance manoeuvrability during operations.
